Our Curriculum

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

- Nelson Mandela

At our setting, we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), supporting every child to learn through play, exploration and meaningful experiences.

We recognise that children learn best when they feel safe, valued and engaged. Our approach nurtures curiosity, independence and confidence, helping each child become a motivated and capable learner.

Learning is supported through:

The prime areas

The prime areas are fundamental in the early years and form the foundation for all future learning.

Personal, social and emotional
development
Communication and language

Children are supported to build strong relationships, develop confidence and understand their emotions.

Within our nurturing environment, children are encouraged to:

  • Form positive relationships with adults and peers

  • Develop self-confidence and independence

  • Understand and manage their feelings and behaviour

Through daily routines, group activities and gentle guidance, children learn to respect others, share, and take responsibility for themselves and their environment.

We create a language-rich environment where children feel confident to express themselves.

Children are supported to:

  • Listen attentively and develop concentration

  • Understand language through conversations and instructions

  • Speak clearly and confidently

Through stories, songs, rhymes and meaningful interactions, we help children build strong communication skills and a growing vocabulary.

Physical development

Children are given plenty of opportunities to be active, both indoors and outdoors.

We support children to:

  • Develop gross motor skills through climbing, running and active play

  • Build fine motor skills through mark-making, tools and small objects

  • Understand the importance of health and self-care

Healthy meals, regular routines and hygiene practices help children develop lifelong healthy habits.

The specific areas

The specific areas build on the prime areas and provide children with essential skills and knowledge.

Literacy

We foster a love of books, stories and early writing.

Children are encouraged to:

  • Enjoy listening to stories, songs and rhymes

  • Develop early reading skills and an understanding of print

  • Begin mark-making and early writing when ready

Our inviting book area and use of local libraries ensure children have access to a wide range of engaging texts.

Mathematics

Children develop early maths skills through play and everyday experiences.

They are supported to:

  • Count, recognise numbers and solve simple problems

  • Sort and categorise objects

  • Understand shape, size and measure

We introduce mathematical language naturally through activities such as building, measuring and exploring.

Understanding the world

We help children make sense of the world around them.

Children have opportunities to:

  • Learn about different cultures, communities and celebrations

  • Explore nature through outdoor play, planting and visits

  • Use age-appropriate technology to support learning

Outings and shared experiences help children develop curiosity, awareness and a sense of belonging.

Expressive arts and design

Creativity and imagination are at the heart of our setting.

Children are encouraged to:

  • Explore different materials and create freely

  • Engage in role play and imaginative activities

  • Enjoy music, movement and dance

Through songs, instruments and creative play, children express themselves and build confidence in their ideas.
